One of the greatest benefits of using movies to advance in your English is that not only do you learn vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, pronunciation and usage but you also acquire condensed knowledge from the authors who spent years and long hours of intensive research to come up with such a story.

Every time a screenplay of a blockbuster is written, years of writing, rewriting, editting take place until it reaches an outstanding level both in quality of writing and in contents. Therefore, every time you stop to see any high-quality motion picture, you´re actually experiencing years of condensed knowledge, learning about an English Speaking country and its culture, and  expanding your awareness of the language and life itself.

Back in the mid 90´s, I was in New York,  more specifically in Manhattan, wandering around the  streets of the Big Apple, in the Central Park surroundings,  when I decided to step into a movie theater to see if there was anything interesting playing. Right at the entrance, I came across this poster with a picture of Tom Hanks sitting on a bench with the simple title: FORREST GUMP which drew my attention and aroused my curiosity to watch it. This movie , again, has been awfully translated here in Brazil as O Contador de  Histórias, something like a Story Teller. In fact, it´s only one story, the story of Forrest Gump´s life through his own eyes and perception, with the filter of what he most believed in during his existence, which was God, His Mom and  Jenny, the real love of his life.

In this wonderful story and through the simplicity of this character you can travel back in time in the history of American culture and see some relevant events which characaterizes them as well as enjoying the great photography and deep philosophical lines about life intricacies permeated by the purity of a genuine love felt by the character in this wonderful motion picture. It´s worth watching  it again.

One of the greatest movies I have ever seen that inspired me to see how very simple people like Forrest can do extraordinary things and accomplish great things in life. Another great lesson of life and a must-see-again movie. If you have a chance, just do it. I am also proud to say that, back then, as soon as I stepped out the movie theater, I told myself `This is definitely an Award Winning Movie. And Tom Hanks will get the Oscar.`

Not to my surprise, a couple months later, there it was: Forrest Gump took home 6 statuettes making it one of the greatest and best films ever produced in Hollywood.
